May 18 is International Museum Day, and our real estate agents are excited to sing the praises of Chicago's many outstanding museums. Ours is a city that has always celebrated art and culture, and it's home to some of America's most vibrant and exciting museums. From ancient history to contemporary art, these are some of the best museums in Chicagoland to visit on International Museum Day.

  • Field Museum -  1400 S Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60605
One of the largest natural history museums in the world, the Field Museum is the crown jewel of Chicago museums. Located within the museum campus just east of the South Loop, the museum houses vast and wide-ranging collections. Halls in the museum are dedicated to Ancient Egypt and China, plants of the world, Audubon bird exhibits, and one of America's best paleontology departments, which includes near-complete T. rex and Spinosaurus skeletons.

  • Art Institute of Chicago - 111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603
The Art Institute of Chicago is home to an incredibly varied collection of ancient and modern art that spans continents and centuries. Some of the museum's most famous residents include Vincent Van Gogh's 1887 Self Portrait, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and Edward Hopper's Nighthawks

  • Chicago History Museum - 1601 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614
Dedicated to preserving and exploring Chicago's unique history, the Chicago History Museum is a fascinating local museum. The museum is managed by the Chicago Historical Society, which was founded in 1856. An ever-changing array of rotating exhibits celebrates everything from historical costumes and clothing to local landmarks and architecture, protest art, and political cartoons.

  • Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures - 1155 E 58th St, Chicago, IL 60637
Nestled in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the University of Chicago campus, the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures is both a research center for faculty and students as well as a museum that is open to the general public. With its keen focus on ancient cultures, including West Asia and North Africa, the museum houses some 350,000 artifacts, roughly 5,000 of which are on display. Most objects in the museum were excavated by ISAC archaeologists, and they shed light on the early history of mankind in places like Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia.

  • National Museum of Mexican Art - 1852 W 19th St, Chicago, IL 60608
The National Museum of Mexican Art has been dedicated to art and culture since it opened its doors in 1987. Always free to the public, the museum displays a wide variety of artwork from both sides of the border, with exhibits ranging from ancient to modern. The National Museum of Mexican Art is located in the Pilsen neighborhood on Chicago's Lower West Side, and is surrounded by the community green space of Harrison Park.

  • Museum of Contemporary Photography - 600 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60605
Downtown Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) has been one of America's foremost photography museums for nearly 50 years. Founded by Columbia College Chicago, the museum's mission is to highlight innovative and thought-provoking photography, drawing on a permanent collection of more than 17,000 works. MoCP offers in-person and remote photography classes as well. It also frequently hosts special exhibitions and events that shine a spotlight on the best contemporary photographers and up-and-coming artists.
