One of the largest natural history museums in the world, the Field Museum is the crown jewel of Chicago museums. Located within the museum campus just east of the South Loop, the museum houses vast and wide-ranging collections. Nestled in the Hyde Park neighborhood on the University of Chicago campus, the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures is both a research center for faculty and students as well as a museum that is open to the general public. With its keen focus on ancient cultures, including West Asia and North Africa, the museum houses some 350,000 artifacts, roughly 5,000 of which are on display. The National Museum of Mexican Art has been dedicated to art and culture since it opened its doors in 1987. Downtown Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) has been one of America's foremost photography museums for nearly 50 years. Founded by Columbia College Chicago, the museum's mission is to highlight innovative and thought-provoking photography, drawing on a permanent collection of more than 17,000 works. MoCP offers in-person and remote photography classes as well. It also frequently hosts special exhibitions and events that shine a spotlight on the best contemporary photographers and up-and-coming artists.
