If you have school-aged children, the summer season is a great time to get a fresh start before the school year starts back up. Transitioning from lazy summer mornings back into a structured routine can be difficult, but getting your home prepared ahead of time makes the shift easier for everyone. Depending on the age of your children, it's even something you can collaborate on together! Read on below for some fun, practical tips to help you prepare for the back-to-school season.

1. Create a Dedicated Homework Station

Having a dedicated spot for your kids to work on homework can help establish a routine and minimize distractions. It can also be a space where they can work on other projects like reading, drawing, and painting. Set up a quiet, well-lit space somewhere in the home and keep it stocked with any school supplies they may need, like paper, rulers, and calculators. Encourage your children to decorate and make the space their own, just like they would with a desk or locker at school.

2. Set up an Entryway Drop Zone

Don't spend another school year stepping over scattered shoes and backpacks in your entryway. This year, designate a specific area near the door where backpacks, lunchboxes, uniform pieces, and school shoes can be easily stored and organized. Consider using hooks or cubbies to keep everything organized and easily accessible. With this space set up, you can even ask your kids to pack their backpacks the night before to avoid morning chaos.

3. Prep the Kitchen

Making sure your kids get out the door with a hearty breakfast, full lunchboxes, and plenty of snacks can be a challenge in the mornings. Simplify breakfasts and meal prep by setting up a designated area for grab-and-go snacks, easy breakfasts, and healthy lunch items. Fill this kid-friendly station with lunch boxes and reusable containers, and keep the fridge or pantry stocked with easy-to-grab snacks like fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Giving your kids some agency to choose and pack their own lunches can also free up more time for you on a busy morning.

4.
Create a Decompression Area

So much of the back-to-school season is about trying to optimize your space so that all those daily tasks go smoothly. Don't forget that you need time to relax, too. Leaving behind a quiet summer at home and heading back into the hectic school year can be an emotional time for some kids. Set up a space in your house where kids and parents alike can relax, decompress, and unwind. Having a cozy spot to hang out inside or an outdoor sanctuary to reconnect with nature will be beneficial for both you and your young ones.

Preparing your home for the back-to-school season sets the stage for a smoother transition. These practical steps can not only simplify daily tasks for you but also foster independence and responsibility in your children, promoting a successful school year ahead.
